The Whitney Headband - (from The City, worn on Whitney Port)

Whitney Port (The City) Inspired Headband

Can't knit or crochet? Buy the actual headband in my shop!  You can purchase them pre-made, or please allow me to make one in your favorite color :)

The following pattern is based off a headband Whitney from The City wears in an episode. I, for one, have not seen the episode, but someone posted a picture of the headband for another purpose and I kind of loved it.

Supplies:
Pattern:
  • CO 84
  • Rows 1-7: (k1, p2) around;
  • Next 3": k around;
  • Last 7 Rows: (k1, p2) around
  • BO, weave in ends
Crochet Flower:
  • Pattern by Candi Jensen, available here.
(Important - 04.21.2010: Originally, this pattern was only accessible if you logged into the Knit and Crochet Now website; however, it looks like the PDF has been permanently disabled or that there is a long-standing error in the download, and I'm not sure when it will be back up again.  If it ever reappears, I will post a notice here!  In the meantime, there are many beautiful flower patterns available on Ravelry, one of which I link below).
  • I have switched the flower used in my headbands to this lovely Irish Rose pattern, available here.  This is the flower pictured above.

thanks for posting this pattern!! I do watch The City, and I fell in love with this headband also! I even tried to get it (from Anthropologie) but all stores were completely sold out. I've been trying to come up with my own knit pattern to make this, but still pretty new to knitting. I made one tonight, but don't know how to keep from the edges from rolling! will the k1,p2 edges keep it from rolling? thanks!!

Yup! The ribbed edge should help keep it from rolling. Regular stockinette will roll by nature, so usually it's bordered with ribbing, rows of garter stitch, seed stitch, etc :)

Let me know how it goes!

Why don't you recommend Caron Simply Soft? Is it too thin or thick? I like to use the Eco, will this work?

Hi, Anonymous! :D

I have used Caron Simply Soft for these before, and they still turn out great. My concern with that specific type of yarn, however, is that it's a bit too thin sometimes, and splits easily. It does still work, though, so go ahead and give it a try. I'd love to see what you come up with using the Eco!

I have been trying to make a headband like this for the past couple of days, did one by crochet but it isnt as cute as this! Think im going to have to have a go at teaching myself to knit.

The link for the flower doesnt work though, can we access that another way?

dear jenny: could you please publish the pattern for the flower? our 16 year old granddaughter would like to be a fashionista at school and asked grandma to make a flowered head band. This is the cutest one I've seen, but the link to Candi's page doesnt work. thanks so much!!

Hey, all!

I've updated the link to the flower pattern. It should now link to: http://www.knitandcrochetnow.com/downloadfly.aspx?download=productimages/BasicCrochetFlower_pattern.pdf

Enjoy!

dear jenny: thanks so much for the posting of the correct link for the flower patter for the whitney headband. Unforturnately this does not seem to open or work. Several of us have tried it 3 or 4 times and cannot get it open. The headband is made and just waiting for the adorable flower. Is there something you could do to e-mail it or send it to me directly?? I would gladly pay for the pattern!! thanks so much. Joyfru@aol.com

Hi!

If you go to the Knit & Crochet Now website, you'll be able to find it under the Season 1 motifs episodes with Candi Jensen. Unfortunately, I don't have the pattern downloaded anywhere to send, and I've been using a different flower myself. There are many flower patterns on Ravelry to choose from in case you still can't get it to work!

Also, you will have to register with Knit and Crochet now to access the page. The download link isn't working for me, either, when I'm not logged in :(

So many problems! Haha.

Thanks for this pattern! I am a very beginner knitter and I am more then half way done! i posted a link and my work in progress on my blog. Thank you!!

I think that I read, in ravelry, that there is a knitted flower pattern in Stitch and Bitch Nation. Well, there is and it's great. It's pretty and very similar to the flower on your headband.

i can't knit myself, is it possible to buy one?

Unknown said...

It is definitely possible to purchase one! I don't have any ready-made ones in my shop, but I'd be more than happy to create one in any color of your choosing for you. Please visit my shop:

To request your custom headband! They typically run for $15, depending on the type of yarn requested.

Thanks!

Hi I purchased this hat and tried to make my own pattern...but I couldn't quite figure it out as I am a beginning knitter. Thank you so much for providing this lovely pattern.

Question: Can it be knitted on regular needles (instead of circular needles)and the edges just sewn together? Thank you.

Unknown said...

You totally can! Just cast on the same number of stitches and create a 1x2 ribbing. Then instead of knitting in the round, knit one row and purl the next until you get the length you'd like before returning to the 1x2 rib. Very simple! I hope this helps!

Thank you so much. I thought I could do it on regular needles.
